The Different Types of Acne

by Danna Finnerand

Acne appears when pores and hair follicles become blocked and produce sores on the skin surface. These lesions can take many forms, including blackheads, pimples, abscesses, cysts, and in some cases even permanent scarring.

Acne is most commonly observed during puberty, part of the adolescent period. This is when the human organism starts to experience big changes in hormone production as a result of the devoloping an adult, grown-up body. Acne can affect both genders at all ages; some people will suffer from acne throughout their complete adult lives.

Pimples inflammation is the most apparent symptom in regard to skin appearance. Inflammatory acne can mostly be seen on the face, but there are other spots on the body that can be affected, like the chest, scalp, upper arms, shoulders, back, neck, and legs. The most prevalent form of acne is the pimple. A pimple appears when a hair follicle or pore becomes irritated and develops small red sores on the skin surface. There are some observable symptoms before the blemish is fully formed. These symptoms include open comedos, closed comedos, pustules, and cysts. Blackheads are blocked pores that have a darker coloration with an opening at the surface of the skin. Whiteheads are slightly different in that they don't have an open ended pore. If they are left alone for a couple of days, they will commonly turn into pustules. If the zits are popped or squeezed, they will generally become more infected and could become scarred. So leaving pimples alone is a good idea.

Non-inflammatory and inflammatory are the major types of acne. Two categories compose the non-inflammatory type: closed and open comedos. A closed comedo is also known as a whitehead and develops on the skin as a small white or yellow bump. The open comedo is otherwise known as a blackhead.

Pustules are pus filled, discolored sores, and have a whitish or yellowish color. They can form from blackheads or whiteheads. They are round sores that have become inflamed because of aggravated sebaceous glands. The skin has many sebaceous glands that secrete an oil-like chemical known as sebum. When sebum is in contact with the skin for a long time, the hair follicles and pores become irritated and infected. Cysts are larger sores filled with pus that appear on the surface but are in reality deep within the epidermis.

No matter what types of zits or scars there are, you will find a good solution that is available. Understanding about the different types of acne will give the acne patient a better idea of the best treatment product for a particular condition.
